How might this happen, you may ask? These siblings were separated at birth in closed adoptions, raised completely separately without knowing of each other's existence. Meeting later in life, they felt an immediate attraction to one another and later decided to wed.
It makes sense why they might feel that pull towards one another --that's human nature. People are attracted to people like themselves... but this is another story. Can you imagine finding out AFTER you've married to someone for a few weeks that you are, in fact, siblings? and TWINS! How traumatizing would that be?
Here's the story:

One more interesting point that the article makes... How do you track people who were conceived by donor sperm or eggs? Confidentiality in this, as well as the closed adoptions, could cause more accidental incest in the future.
Apparently Oedipus and Jocasta are not the only ones to make this mistake...
Here are some questions to explore (Note: you are free to ask your own questions as well)
- What do you think about this story?
- What does it say about the concept of fate and destiny?
- How does this situation relate to the conflict in Oedipus Rex?
When I first read this story, I immediately felt pity for the people involved. What a terrible tragedy to think you found a soulmate only to discover it's a person who is related to you--and related so closely. I also felt horror, disgust, and shame for these people--through no fault of theirs, this awful thing occurred. I would imagine this would be something you might never really recover from.
ReplyDeleteAfter I read this story I was really shocked. I could not believe that this could happen to some people that loved each other. I really feel sorry for them. This relates to Oedipus rex because this kind of happened to them. They fell in love, only to find out that they were related.
ReplyDeleteI was a bit disgusted after reading this story that would be so weird to accidentally marry your brother or sister. Oedipus acidentally married a member of his immediate family just like the people in this story. I believe in the saying "when you play with fire you get burned" I think that when you mess with fate it always manages to come back to you whether good or not.
ReplyDeleteeww. that is nasty. i could not imagine marrring someone in my family. expecially my brother or sister.. that makes me sick..

ReplyDeleteafter reading this it didnt really seem disturbing to me because things like this happen alllllll the time and its not their fault that they didnt know they were twins until two weeks later... its basically saying that no matter what fate can bring up the most akward or disturbing moments even though you might not like it it happens... and it relates to oedipus rex because oedipus married his mother without knowing that jocaste was his mother so yea

ReplyDeleteThis story is kind of ironic because we just read a story on how a son mariied his mother. That is nasty and wrong in so many ways that isn't normal or sanitary.

ReplyDeletethat was reeeal gay, i fewould feel bad if i married one of my family members and didnt know it
ReplyDeleteI think this story seems like one in a million as my point of view. Its really shocking. In the concept of fate and destiny i believe that it just was a conindence and it wasnt fate, that she could have marry sumeone else if she choose to live at a different location. It relates to odeipus because he marry his mom without knowing. Maybe if odepidus were to think more and made different chocies i believe he could have avoided the situation of him getting marry with his mother.
ReplyDeleteI think that is nasty but you cant blame the twins for knowing then doing it b/c they didnt know. Noone told them about it. I'm kinda in the same boat. My cousin got two different girls pregnant and had the two babies with them. He's not planning on telling the children either...I think that if you are4 going to do something like that you should at least tell the kids. And if you are planning on adopting then adopt the sibling(s) too so that this doesn't keep happening.
ReplyDeleteI think this was wrong for this to happen. There should be a law that even though that siblings are split up at birth later they should be told about any family they have. This isn't the only case of this happening though all through history family has married thier cousin or another distant relative.
ReplyDeleteI think the story isn't all that amazing because the likelihood of this happing isn't that farfetched; it is wierd.
ReplyDeleteIt can be said that this story shows that the twins were fated to meet, and that destiny was responsible.
This is situation relates to that in Oedipus Rex in that a becuase the family was separated, and had no knowledge of each other that when they first meet they mistook a family bond with something more intimate. The absence of knowledge of the other's identity lead to some rather bizarre situations.
i think its kinda funny how the twins met each other later in life and married
ReplyDeleteyou will never know what your faith and destiny is
just like in the book they grew up and married a family member
I think this whole story is kinda freaky. But I also feel bad for the couple because they love each other and just found out they are related. This says that fate and destiny ends up winning all of the time. This situation is related to the conflict in Oedipus Rex because Iocasta and Oedipus did not know that they were related when they got married. The two twins did not know that they were related when they married either.
ReplyDeletei think it is pretty sick. I think that the addoption agency should have let them know that they had a twin but not let them know who it was. The chances of this happening are very slim but never the less it still happened, so now they must deal with it. Oedipus had know clue about his mother and father. he had always thought that his parents were with him and was never told that he was found on a hill. Marrying your own mother is more messed up than marrying your sister.
ReplyDeleteI think that was not good for the brother and sister to get split up. I wasn't there fote they got married, but that is nasty!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
