Rand today!

Here are three articles that discuss Rand and her beliefs in relation to things going on today.

Many of you may recall that within the disaproval of Obama, words like "socialism" and "communism" have been spread around in regards to his ideas for a universal health care system, modifications to taxes and the banking system, and government control of big businesses. Whether you agree with these thoughts or disagree is one thing, but it seems to speak of Rand's main ideas of the government looking to limit some from seeking their individual potential. Again, these ideas are very radical and extreme, but they do question how things should be run.

Many of the following articles relate more to her other book, Atlas Shrugged, which many believe to have been an almost identical scenario to that of our current economic situation. Start off with the first article to fully understand it's main points.

The following article is written with less emphasis on politics and the economy, and more with individuality which we discussed a few days ago.

If none of these seem interesting enough for you, try to find your own Rand-related article to write about. You can find many on the Ayn Rand Institute website, as well as on any news search engine (news.google.com, news.yahoo.com, etc...).

Make sure you comment!!

  1. The 'Be unique like everyone else' artical is very inspiring. You never want to be like anyone but yourself. You should always want to be your own person, not what anyone wants you to be. To me the more different you are the more noone else can be the same.

  2. the article " Be unique like everyone else" was intersting to me because for me to be like everyone else is me not doing what i do best... being me. the use of the word Weird was used as a tempelet to tell how he felt about his school life and how he benefited from it. he told how he saw the word " Weird " and what it ment to him. he notices that sometimes it is good to be weird that it will help you perdict your future; according to past definitions of the word, he used it to tell how he was different and how it was good for him.

  3. I can TRULY relate to the "Be unique like everyone else" article because i cant go a single place without being called wierd... but honestly hearing the definition "strikingly odd or unusual character" the people that call me wierd are just about as wierd themselves more or less because they do odd or "wierd" things wear odd or "wierd" clothes so more or less EVERYONE in society is in someway or another wierd so basically when people call me wierd there just saying im different. but its really funny because when people call me "wierd" do they think that they are "normal" or whatever.... think about it ;)

  4. The article Missing the Point of Atlas Shrugged is about people misinterpreting the novel and deluding themselves into believing that they are a genius. It gives informative details on the plot of Atlas shrugged, and the similarities the novels setting has to modern day America. The author of the article,John Wellington Ennis, also gives details on Ayn Rand personal life.

The main point of the article is that while the the novel may be similar to the economic situation it is still a work of fiction, and can not solely be used to form opinions or start a movement. It is a novel, not a guide to how to live your life; especially when the main character is a genius.

On a final note it seems that Ayn Rand had a volatile temper, and was not what most would deem a good role model. This information if even slightly true gives new insights on Rand's character, and style of writing.
